Agent discovery gives AI agents one standard place to find the machine-readable parts of your site. It publishes two small files, and it is off until you switch it on.

What it publishes

  • /.well-known/api-catalog is an API catalog in the RFC 9727 format (a linkset). It points to your WordPress REST API, when that is public, and to your RankReady MCP manifest, when that is on.
  • /.well-known/agent-skills/index.json is an agent skills index. It follows a draft specification, so the format may change. It lists one skill, read-site-content, whose page tells an agent which entry points your site serves.

With discovery on, your home page also sends a Link header with rel="api-catalog" that points to the catalog.

Only what is switched on

The files list only the endpoints you have turned on: llms.txt, llms-full.txt, Markdown pages, the MCP manifest and your XML sitemap. If a feature is off, it is not listed. Nothing listed answers with a 404.

Turning it on

  1. Activate a RankReady Pro licence.
  2. Open RankReady > Settings and choose the Agent discovery tab.
  3. Tick Publish discovery files and save.

Once it is on, the tab shows the two addresses so you can open them.

When it is off

Both files return a normal 404, and the response is marked not to be cached. This is the default. It is also what happens if the licence is not active.

If the files return 403

On nginx, a server rule can answer /.well-known/ addresses with 403 before WordPress sees them. It is a server setting that no plugin can override. The fix is the same as for the MCP manifest: /.well-known/mcp.json returns 403 on nginx.

Check it

Open both addresses in a browser or fetch them with curl. You should see JSON. RankReady Pro diagnostics also has a row for Agent discovery that says whether it is on or off.

What this does and does not do

It makes your entry points easier to find. It does not promise that any agent will read them, cite you or rank you.
